VABION LLC (VABION) announced today that VABION chief executive and chief scientist Susan Hardwicke, Ph.D., will present a workshop titled “Chemo Brain and Recovery” at the 2009 Virginia Blood Cancer Conference on September 26, 2009, in Richmond, Virginia. Created and presented by the Virginia Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the conference is an annual event for blood cancer patients, survivors, parents, caregivers, oncology nurses, and social workers. Dr. Hardwicke is a Stage III breast cancer survivor whose experience in recovering from chemo brain inspired the creation of a program designed to help survivors and professionals.
“I experienced cancer treatment and chemotherapy as a patient, and had excellent care from all of the professionals who treated me. However, the brain-damaging side effects of chemotherapy effects, such as chemo brain, weren’t well recognized at the time. I paid a high price for that lack of knowledge,” Dr. Hardwicke said. Memory impairment, speech difficulties, slowed reaction time, and decision-making were among the problems she encountered after beginning chemotherapy treatments.
Dr. Hardwicke, author of an eBook on Chemo Brain, will present an overview of research on chemo brain, a summary of the Chemo Brain Recovery program she developed, and descriptions of her experience as she recovered. The program involves nutrition, mental and physical exercise, and emotional and spiritual growth, as well as new evidence about reducing anxiety and fog associated with chemo brain.
