Cypriot negotiations on reunification of the island of Cyprus are on the agenda for talks in Washington between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry (above, right) and Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

During a May 13 press opportunity at the State Department, Kerry said: “We have been talking and working on the issue of trying to find a peace for Cyprus, a reunification of the island, a bizonal, bicommunal federation policy.”

The island of Cyprus is partitioned into the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish-controlled north, which covers just under 40 percent of the island’s area.

Kerry also expressed appreciation for Cyprus’ role as a strategic partner in the effort to remove chemical weapons from Syria.
