President Obama and French President François Hollande reaffirmed the enduring friendship between their two nations during a February 10 tour of Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, who drafted the U.S. Declaration of Independence and served as the third president of the United States.

“I thought this was an appropriate way to start the state visit because what it signifies is the incredible history between the United States and France,” Obama said. He noted that Jefferson, who served as U.S. minister to France from 1785 to 1789, “was a Francophile through and through.”

Jefferson “drew inspiration from the Enlightenment ideas that had been developed in France and throughout Europe, but he also drew from the arts, from the architecture, from the writings, from the culture and from the cuisine of France. And so, in this sense, this home [Monticello] represents the bonds that helped lead to the American Revolution, helped to influence the French Revolution, figures like Lafayette, who played such a central role in our own independence,” Obama said.

Hollande, shown at left looking at items on the desk in Jefferson’s Monticello office, said: “We were allies in the time of Jefferson and Lafayette. We are still allies today. We were friends in the time of Jefferson and Lafayette, and we will remain friends forever.”

Hollande is in the United States for a three-day visit that will include discussions on bilateral cooperation on worldwide security challenges and economic development. Obama said he looked forward to speaking with Hollande about “issues of human dignity and human rights not just in our own countries, but around the world as well.”
