For the first time since 1990, the United Kingdom will host the NATO Summit, providing an opportunity to showcase and market Welsh culture.

The scenic Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, South Wales (shown above), is designated as the primary venue, with other events to take place in the Wales capital, Cardiff. The meeting is set for September 4–5.

In announcing Wales as his choice, Prime Minister David Cameron cited the importance of the summit, which may involve nearly 60 heads of state and thousands of journalists, to the local economy of its host location.

A NATO summit is not a regular event but is regarded as a periodic opportunity for heads of NATO member countries to evaluate and provide strategic direction.

President Obama is expected to attend, making his first visit to Wales. At the top of the summit agenda is the close of NATO's mission in Afghanistan. The summit also will mark the 65th anniversary of NATO.
