He will succeed Dame Mariot Leslie DCMG, who will be retiring from the Diplomatic Service. Mr Thomson will take up his appointment during the spring of 2014.

Mr Thomson joined the FCO in 1978 and has served in a variety of roles relevant to NATO’s work, including previous work in the UK Delegation to NATO.

On his appointment as Permanent Representative to the United Kingdom’s Delegation to NATO, Mr Thomson has said:

"I feel privileged to have been given the chance to serve my country and lead the UK Delegation to NATO, the essential and enduring alliance that is the cornerstone of Britain’s security.

"I look forward to doing all I can to maintain and strengthen the United Kingdom’s constructive role in supporting the military and political work of NATO."
