Today Senior Foreign Office Minister Baroness Warsi concluded her visit to Muscat, Makkah and Jeddah. Key themes of the visit were religious tolerance and the promotion of the UK as a centre of Islamic Finance.

During Baroness Warsi’s first visit to Oman she met with the Deputy Foreign Minister, Head of the Central Bank and leading members of the Islamic Finance industry. During her visit, the Minister also delivered a keynote address on the threat of sectarianism at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat. The Minister highlighted Oman’s long history and commitment promoting understanding between faith communities.

In Saudi Arabia, Baroness Warsi discussed city development and the protection of historical sites with His Royal Highness the Governor of Makkah and the Mayor of the city, as well as preparations for this year’s hajj. In her meetings with the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques and the Secretary General of the OIC, Baroness Warsi discussed the importance of religious freedom and women’s rights.

During her meetings with the President of the Islamic Development Bank and leading Jeddah based Islamic Finance practitioners, Baroness Warsi outlined the work the UK Government was undertaking to make London a global centre for Islamic Finance.
