Foreign Secretary William Hague has highlighted his priorities for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2014. Speaking in a video message recorded on 11 December, the Foreign Secretary said:

"In 2014 it is vital that we keep the wheels of diplomacy turning towards an end to the conflict in Syria and a comprehensive resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue. And we must spare no effort in seeking to put an end to the horrors of sexual violence in conflict, which is why we will hold an unprecedented global summit in London to raise awareness and stimulate action."

In his message, the Foreign Secretary also reflected on the achievements of UK diplomacy in 2013:

"The last year has demonstrated the value and importance of diplomacy: on Syria and on Iran, hard diplomatic effort has made advances over the toughest terrain. The UK has shown determination and leadership, including through our G8 Presidency, our strong support for the Arms Trade Treaty, and our championing of the cause of preventing sexual violence in conflict."

The Foreign Office has created a month-by-month timeline of major events in 2013. You can view the timeline here - 2013: A year in Review

The Foreign Secretary thanked all those who represent the UK overseas:

"I thank all those who work so hard for the UK and for the sake of a safer, fairer and more prosperous world. I wish you and your families wherever you are a Merry Christmas and a peaceful and Happy New Year."
