FCO Minister Hugh Robertson welcomed the signing in Sana’a on the 23 December of the Agreement on a Just Solution to the Southern Question.

Mr Robertson recognised the leadership President Hadi of Yemen in building political consensus and called on all political parties to work with him.

He said:

"The Agreement aims to remove obstacles to the closure of the National Dialogue Conference and to express a consensus view of the way forward that meets the aspirations of the Yemeni people regarding this issue. This is an important step towards the closure of the National Dialogue Conference and the implementation of the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative.

"I welcome the clear and steadfast leadership of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi in building political consensus in Yemen. I firmly believe that all political parties in Yemen should continue to engage with President Hadi in good faith, and address each other’s concerns with understanding and a spirit of compromise.

"I commend the efforts by all participants of the National Dialogue Conference to date. All parties and groups in Yemen must continue to work together to resolve the remaining items under consideration at the National Dialogue Conference, in order to take the political transition forward to its next stage by the beginning of 2014, and before the next report of the Special Advisor to the Secretary General to the United Nations’ Security Council in January."
