BMI View: The Chilean mobile market continues to make strong gains, and the competitive environment continues to improve. This is particularly the case following the introduction of mobile number portability(MNP) in Q112 and MVNO Virgin Mobile in Q212. Mobile broadband is the area of strongest growth in the telecommunications sector, and looking ahead, this is likely to continue as Chileans increasingly find smartphones a convenient way of accessing internet services.
Key Data
- In the first two months since the launch of MNP on January 16 2012, the number of subscribers that ported their mobile numbers reached 295,387 in Chile. Claro led mobile number portings, registering net additions of 60,255 subscribers in the period ended May 31.
- Mobile broadband connections in Chile grew by around 105% to 2.96mn in 2011, compared with 2.01mn of fixed broadband connections. By the end of Q112, connections had grown to 3.43mn and 2.06mn respectively.
- ARPUs remained buoyant. Entel led with CLP8,900, followed by Movistar with CLP6,820 (according to BMI calculations from EUR to CLP) and Claro with CLP6,195 for Q112.

Risk/Reward Ratings
Chile did not experience any adjustments to its ratings in Q412, and stays in second place behind Brazil for another quarter. Net additions fell from Q411, however, unsurprising, as the first quarter often reports slower growth than the fourth quarter. Despite this, the country still remains one of our favourites, given its stable economic and political environment, prudent regulator and receptivity to new technology.
Key Trends & Developments
Chilean retail group Falabella has confirmed plans to establish an MVNO in Chile. It has also revealed it wants to establish operations in other Latin American markets including Argentina, Colombia and Peru. The country's LTE auction was delayed from June to September 2012. 25MHz of spectrum is to be auctioned, with the government hoping to award between four and six licences.
In July, Claro, Movistar and Entel announced they are evaluating the possibility of a joint venture for the launch of 4G. Entel announced it had begun trials of LTE using its 100MHz of spectrum in the 3.5GHz band.
