BMI View: The total size of the Lebanese IT market in 2013 is forecast by BMI at US$364mn, up from US$337mn in 2011. BMI expects a market CAGR of 12% for 2013-2017. Lebanon's IT spending is forecast to record single-digit growth in 2013, slower than previously forecast, as the market feels the impact of regional economic and political uncertainty. Lebanon's IT market is set to benefit from initiatives to develop a digital southern Mediterranean region and from new investment in telecoms infrastructure aimed at significantly scaling up the country's inadequate broadband facilities.

Key Trends & Developments
- There are a number of specific ICT challenges on the Lebanese government's agenda that are equally important for IT market development. These include improving ICT infrastructure, overcoming the digital divide, investing in IT skills, making businesses more efficient through technology and e-government. The biggest impediment to the IT market is the cost of communications. In 2012, government institutions continued to make progress with their informatisation agendas. Highlights included the implementation, by the Ministry of Finance, of a new intercommunications system for its 5,000 employees.
- The Lebanese government has also launched an initiative to stimulate the development of cloud computing in the country. Particular areas of opportunity for cloud computing include banking and retailing as organisations in those fields look to save money on hardware investments. However, further improvements in broadband infrastructure will be required before cloud services can attain critical momentum in Lebanon.
