The University of Arizona biochemistry department notes that adults require nine essential amino acids in their diets: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. The World Health Organization, or WHO, calculates amino acid needs based on your body weight.
In terms of milligrams per kilogram of body weight, you need 10 mg of histidine, 20 mg of isoleucine, 39 mg of leucine, 30 mg of lysine, 10 mg of methionine, 25 mg of phenylalanine, 15 mg of threonine, 4 mg of tryptophan and 26 mg of valine daily. Serotonin (a neurotransmitter), synthesized via tryptophan hydroxylase. Serotonin, in turn, can be converted to melatonin (a neurohormone), via N-acetyltransferase and 5-hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase activities. Serotonin is known to regulate aging, learning and memory.
Niacin is synthesized from tryptophan via kynurenine and quinolinic acids as key biosynthetic intermediates.
Auxin (a phytohormone) when sieve tube elements undergo apoptosis tryptophan is converted to auxins.
Also, tryptophan has shown some promise as an antidepressant alone and as an "augmenter" of antidepressant drugs.
