BMI View: Overall pharmaceuticals growth in Sweden will remain low and even decline over the short term due to patent expiration and cost containment policies, resulting in opportunities for generic drugmakers. Despite the low growth, the increasingly ageing population in Sweden means expanding eldercare demands and will continue to attract medical devices suppliers, healthcare providers and pharmaceuticals players.
Headline Expenditure Projections
- Pharmaceuticals: SEK42.84bn (US$6.60bn) in 2011 to an expected SEK42.13bn (US$6.08bn) in 2012; -1.7% in local currency terms and -7.8% in US dollar terms. Forecasts broadly in line with previous quarter.
- Healthcare: SEK327bn (US$50.36bn) in 2011 to an expectedSEK336.28bn (US$48.53bn) in 2012; +2.8% in local currency terms and -3.63% in US dollar terms. Forecasts slightly upgraded due to receipt of historic data.
- Medical devices: SEK21.04bn (US$3.24bn) in 2011 to an expectedSEK21.84bn (US$3.15bn) in 2012; +3.80% in local currency terms and -2.73% in US dollar terms. Forecasts broadly in line with previous quarter.

Risk/Reward Rating: In Q412 Pharmaceuticals Risk/Rewards Ratings for Western Europe, Sweden continues to rank fifth among the 10 key markets in the region, with an unchanged score of 67.6. Despite low growth, the country's strong regulatory environment, high per-capita pharmaceuticals expenditure and an increasingly ageing population will continue to attract multinationals to the country. However, we note there will be an increased focused on cost containment policies should healthcare cost escalate beyond what the government can fund.
Key Trends And Developments
- In July 2012, the Swedish Medical Product Agency (SWPA) published its own introductory guidelines to the EU Commission 'MEDDEV 2.1/6 Guidelines on the Classification of Stand Alone Software Used in the Healthcare within the Regulatory Framework of Medical Devices' as it saw a need for further clarification and deeper understanding of IT systems within the healthcare sector.
- In June 2012, the Swedish envoy to Zambia, Lena Nordstrom, said the Swedish government will resume funding to the Ministry of Health in Zambia by investing about US$6.25mn in various healthcare initiatives. The decision came after progress by the ministry in improving the management of funds, which are intended to be used for procurement of essential drugs and medical supplies, and development of healthcare infrastructure. Sweden suspended funding to Zambia in 2009 after reports of extensive embezzlement of funds in the sector.
