The market grew substantially both in volume and value terms during the review period (2008-2012). In terms of transaction volume, the industry grew at a CAGR of 11.45% during the review period from 309.4 million transactions in 2008 to 477.4 million in 2012. It is anticipated that this volume will grow at a CAGR of 5.60% over the forecast period (2013-2017), to reach 653.3 million transactions in 2017.
Debit cards remained the largest category in volume terms, with a market share of 46.1% followed by prepaid cards with a market share of 35.5%. The roll-out of loyalty programs and cashback schemes is encouraging a greater number of people to engage in card transactions. One of the best-known examples is from Ceska Sporitelna, which rolled out its 'Bonus' loyalty program during the review period for both debit and credit cards in a bid to increase incremental revenues.
With the majority of its customers using debit cards primarily for ATM cash withdrawals, Ceska Sporitelna wanted to increase the proportion of "active" cards - defined as cards used for at least one POS transaction per month.
