BMI View: Swiss banks are set to continue facing major challenges in the coming years. The increasingly stringent Swiss and international regulatory environment will weigh on the banking sector's growth and profitability. Moreover, growing pressure for the Swiss government to loosen the country's strict banking secrecy law could also see the banking sector lose a large part of its clientele. The Swiss banking sector's growth and profitability will continue to face a number of headwinds in the coming quarters, as we have outlined previously (see our online service, February 9, 'Bank Challenges Will Not Go Away'). Fiscal austerity and a weak growth outlook in the eurozone, where we forecast a 0.5% real GDP contraction in 2012, will weigh on the Swiss economy and concurrently Swiss banks' domestic activities. Indeed, as we expect the Swiss economy to grow a tepid 0.8% in 2012, we reiterate our forecast for paltry loan growth of 0.5% in 2012.
