BMI View: The Hungarian domestic banking sector faces a prolonged period of weakness, driven by poor domestic and external macroeconomic conditions, continued fears over government policy trajectory and weak credit dynamics.
An IMF/EU external financing deal is expected to be secured later in the year, but aside from greater economic and financial stability, it is unlikely to drive a renaissance in the banking sector. Our core outlook for the Hungarian banking sector is unchanged from last quarter. A weak domestic economic environment, deteriorating credit conditions and sustained fears over government policy will weigh heavily on the performance of domestic banks (see our online service, February 9, 'IMF Deal No Panacea For Banks').
While the timing issue has become more clouded, we still expect the Hungarian government to secure a new IMF/EU external financing deal this year. However, while this will secure much-needed stabilisation for financial markets, external financial assistance will not help bring about an immediate reversal in banks' fortunes. Nor will the Hungarian central bank's (MNB) efforts at boosting liquidity in the domestic banking sector help to reinvigorate credit growth.
