With services stretching across this great, wide land, Great Southern Rail transports travellers to the most remote and stunning Australian vistas. CEO Chris Tallent has been with the company for a year and is dedicated to creating immersive, eye-opening experiences for his customers.
“We want to provide our guests with wonderful ‘journeys of discovery’, enabling a richer experience, shared stories, and connection with some of the most remote and beautiful parts of Australia,” Chris says. “We’re focused on iconic Australian experiences with a great sense of history. We provide the only transcontinental guest rail services, and we operate across six states and territories.”
Great Southern Rail’s iconic Indian Pacific service stretches across 4,352 kilometres and connects Sydney, Adelaide, and Perth. The Ghan travels between Adelaide, Alice Springs, and Darwin and shows passengers 2,979 kilometres of breathtaking desert scenery. The Overland connects Adelaide with Melbourne on its 828-kilometre journey. And the Southern Spirit periodically travels between Adelaide and Brisbane via Melbourne, covering a further 2,810 kilometres.
To ensure each passenger on these services experiences an unforgettable journey, Chris carefully cultivates his team. “It is vital that a strong and aligned leadership team and support structure is in place,” Chris says. “It is also critical that we continue to attract and retain a team of motivated people who love what they do and enjoy sharing and supporting these amazing experiences with our guests. Great service comes naturally to the right people.
“We have a ‘one-team’ approach, where all divisions work collaboratively and positively together to support each other and the objectives of the business. We have continual assessment, guest research, feedback, and focus groups, along with responsive product and experience refinement and development.”
