The growth and development of its employees, suppliers, and partners is a core component of Bis Industries’ success. Since assuming the role of CEO in 2010, Ian says, he has endeavoured to embed this philosophy and value into the company’s culture.

“I’ve always had the absolute focus and belief that if you invest in your people and you provide your people with the skills and the opportunities to perform, they will continue to exceed your expectations. I’ve put a lot of my career and time into people and their development.

“One of the cornerstones of the company’s success, and my personal success, is the continual investment in both our people in the organisation and in our relationships with external providers. I think that approach shaped my management style to be one of inclusion and clear expectation setting. I established a clear vision for the company’s future so everyone understands the journey ahead and their role.”

Bis Industries’ continual investment in its employees is conducted in a holistic and multilayered manner. “We invest in our people through many means, from our internal Skills Development Centre to our Bis Industries University, which is focused on the development of tomorrow’s leaders. Rigorous processes of reviews and feedback sessions have been developed and implemented in the business to identify talent and emerging leaders.

“The ability to attract and retain employees is critical, and simply doing this through pay rates is not enough. Employees are intelligent and progressive in today’s world, and it is imperative that a company can provide the opportunity to continually develop and expand a team member’s career opportunities.

“Our philosophy in the development of our staff is founded in the key principle of ‘leaders developing leaders’, with most of our training delivered by leaders from within the business using an internally developed curriculum. To be successful as a leader in Bis Industries, your focus must be on the success of your people, not yourself.”

This proactive, people-focused approach has reaped remarkable rewards for Bis Industries. “We have significantly grown over the past 13 years,” states Ian. “When KKR acquired Bis Industries, it was like someone took the blinkers off: we had a lot more peripheral vision in the business and an increased understanding of how to measure and manage it for both internal and external success.
