In 1999, sole director of Goodline John Kennedy first established his business to provide professional construction services that support the mining sector. “I had 20-odd years in construction,” John says. “I had three kids that I’d dragged around the countryside for the first nine years of their lives. We moved 11 times in one year and it was just getting harder and harder. I was looking for a job and this bloke asked me to enter into partnership with him. I lasted one month, but I couldn’t be his partner. I’m a bit driven and he was a little different. He later offered me a vendor finance term, which I believed I could meet, so I rounded up some money, bought the business off him, and started from there.”
From this humble beginning, John has built Goodline into the multifaceted, multi-locational operation it is today. However, building the company from the ground up has presented some obstacles. “Finding work is the greatest challenge you ever have to face,” John says. “We can come to work some days, and half our work is project work and the other half is miscellaneous. When you have 100 people staring you in the face and you’ve only got a job for 30 of them, it becomes a big challenge. The miscellaneous work is 10 times harder than other jobs in terms of organisation and ensuring people are working all the time.
“We work in Port Hedland, Weipa and Darwin. We also operate anywhere between changing a tap washer in the mine to doing shutdowns. We do little capital projects and even some labour hire work. We do virtually anything their people can’t, and that’s what we do in those three places. I’ve also got a builders licence, so we do a bit of building around those areas. We probably do more building in Darwin, and we do a lot of government work there as well.”
