Since its establishment in 2005, THE Shed Company has grown from two people to 40 franchisees across Australia, with a reseller network of more than 30 other businesses. This fast growing and industry-recognised Australian-owned and -operated franchise group was established by Managing Director Janet Hamilton and her husband Robert Hamilton.

Janet says one of THE Shed Company’s greatest achievements has been its astonishing growth.

“We started as two people with minimal capital, and we are now financially secure with an impressive portfolio. My husband and I were a part of another franchise group and through that experience we learnt all the bad things about being a franchisee. We decided that we wanted to make a difference for our franchisees and distributors as well as our resellers and their clients.

“It’s been a very long and hard journey. We initially started with our own shed business to make sure it was going to work. If it worked for us, then we decided we were going to franchise the business model. After figuring out engineering, software and legal agreements, we set out to recruit our franchisees. We’ve been going almost eight years now and we’ve seen many changes in the industry. As a business, we’ve changed and developed over the years as well.”

THE Shed Company’s network has steadily expanded, despite the uncertainties suffered by the Australian economy and franchise groups in general. Janet claims her focus has always been on investing and retaining staff and bolstering the company.

“I would describe myself as a ‘make-it-happen’ person and I’m always out there looking for new developments and opportunities, and ways to grow the business and the network. We were named as one of the top-eight franchising companies in Australia in 2007, 2009 and 2010 by the Australian Financial Review’sSmart Investor’ magazine. We’re the fastest-growing franchise group selling sheds and garages in Australia, and we have been for several years.”
