SA Water Win Platinum Award In The Official Australian Construction Magazine

SA Water Project Director, Milind Kumar spoke to The Official Australian Construction Magazine in an exclusive interview

The $1.824-billion Adelaide Desalination Plant is an impressive testament to SA Water’s dedication to a sustainable and secure water supply. The mammoth project was inspired by years of drought and the state’s reliance on rivers and other rain-dependent resources. The South Australian Government recognised the need for a sea-water desalination plant and in 2008 began designing what has become a state-of-the-art critical infrastructure asset for the people South Australia.

SA Water Project Director Milind Kumar says the innovative facility is a pioneer, both in technology and design.

“The project is one of the largest of its type in Australia and Asia. When complete, it should provide up to half of Adelaide’s annual drinking-water supply, or 100 billion litres of water each year. It is designed with a flexible load plant so it can run at any capacity from 10 per cent to 100 per cent in steps of 10 per cent. On average, it should produce up to 300 million litres of desalinated drinking water every day.

“The technology we use in the plant is innovative; it uses world’s best practice and proven ultra-filtration-membrane technology for pre-treatment, which helps to remove chemicals, minerals, bugs and viruses. The sea water is then put through a series of reverse-osmosis membranes to desalinate it to make high-quality drinking water. This comprehensive process allows us to achieve stringent drinking-water guidelines, improve process efficiency and also achieve a longer life for the plant components.”
