Things are hotting up for the ceramic event, Clay Energy, to be held in Gulgong from 28 April to 2 May, 2010. Everyday there are enquiries from people from all over Australia wanting to attend. And from China, the Philippines, Malaysia and Israel, emails came in yesterday asking for details. Every day, the queries come in from around the world.

Now only two months away, it looks as if the 2010 event will be larger than ever. Held every three years, this event has caught the imagination of potters and ceramic artists everywhere. The location has much to do with the success of these events. Gulgong is renowned for its famous clays, used by artists throughout Australia and beyond. Most of the clays are fine, white and easily modelled and respond well to all the processes of making pots and sculpture.

There are some clays that are natural porcelains while others are textured and fire to a beautiful tan colour. Potters are blessed in this region with other minerals suitable for the potter’s palette.   Clay Energy Gulgong 2010 celebrates the eighth time that a gathering of potters and ceramics people has met in Gulgong. Every hall has been booked for exhibitions, every shop window will feature ceramics, the Opera House will be the site of the lecture series and the Red Hill Environmental Centre will house all the demonstrations of ceramic processes.

More than 20 international and Australian artists have been invited to Gulgong to demonstrate their techniques and talk about their work and ideas. The 300 or so participants will arrive on 28 April to an official welcome that evening and then the program will start the following morning with a non-stop round of activities. One of the international artists, Frank Boyden from Oregon, USA, is the special artist sponsored by the Mid-Western Regional Council for this event. Known for his expertise with forming porcelain, his expressive drawing on the clay and with his general approach to art, he is an ideal choice. Some of his work is immense in scale and he has been the recipient of many commissions. All those attending will gain from listening to him and watching him work.

There are a significant number of artists coming from Finland as part of this event. We are expecting about 10 artists from that home of finely-designed Scandinavian wares. In addition four Hungarian artists will demonstrate and lecture on decorative and sculptural techniques while an international trio, one each from the UK, USA and NZ will examine ‘the dynamic surface’ as part of their performances. The two Australian invited artists, Louise Boscacci and Ken Yonetani are both fine artists who have become famous beyond Australia for their ceramic art. To add to this, there are two Israeli artists demonstrating their ceramic techniques and talking about the state of art in their home country.

The format of the demonstrations is one-to-one for the participants. As they visit the different studios they are able to talk to the invited guests, ask questions, and make contacts and connections for future interaction.   Every day the program seems to become expanded with film previews, book launches, competitions and exhibition openings. The organiser of the event, Janet Mansfield, from Gulgong, believes that this 2010 ceramic festival will be memorable in all the best ways.
