The most potential for growth and development in Kazakhstan's freight transport sector remains in the country's rail freight market. The country's exports are concentrated on the freighting of bulk products namely oil and grain. The country's rail freight sector has developed to cater for these needs and will continue to do so in the longer term, as both commodities look set to continue dominating Kazakhstan's trade sector.

Rail freight is also in high demand as Kazakhstan develops its role as a conduit for freight to be shipped by land between Asia and Europe. The country is playing a role in the development of the Asia-Europe landbridge, a route linking China to Europe via rail. To aid in this role Kazakhstan is developing a logistics hub in Khorgos, near the Chinese border.

BMI highlights foreign interest in Kazakhstan's rail freight sector as another positive for the freight modes development. The interest stems from Russia and currently plans are being drawn up to create a joint venture between Russian, Kazakh and Belarusian rail freight firms, which would enable Kazakhstan rail freight to develop outside of the country's borders.

The development goes both ways, with Kazakhstan also interested in gaining a stake in Russia's rail freight sector.

Rail freight is not the only land-based freight mode to be seeking to gain exposure to Kazakhstan's position as a conduit for trade from east to west. The Western Europe-Western China highway project is being developed to link Asia-Europe via road and the project is set to benefit Kazakhstan's road freight sector.

Key Industry Trends

Russia and Kazakhstan Team Up

Connections between Kazakhstan and Russia in the rail freight sector continue to increase. FESCO's interest in Kazakhstan's Khorgos International Centre of Boundary Cooperation (KICBC) project highlights a growing trend that BMI has noted of Russian firms expanding their exposure in Kazakhstan's freight transport sector. The interest is understandable, with the country's domestic demand increasing and Kazakhstan ideally located to play a major role in the development of land trade links between Asia and Europe.

Developing Greater A-E Landbridge Role

The development of the Asia-Europe landbridge continues and Kazakhstan is ensuring it continues to play a major role in the project.
