The China Defence and Security Report examines the country's strategic position in Asia and the wider world. It provides an overview of the contemporary geopolitical challenges facing the country, and the challenges it may face in the future.

The report examines the trends occurring in the country's current and future defence procurement, and the order of battle across its armed forces. The intention is to provide a clear and concise discussion of these issues. The report's general conclusion is that China remains firmly on its long-established course of military modernisation, in spite of the friction that this modernisation path is causing.

Tensions with the United States and India are being carefully managed. However, the US rebalancing to Asia continues to cause as much concern in Beijing as China's rise is causing in Washington. Similarly, while Beijing and New Delhi have shown a willingness to improve their relations, both sides continue to build up the military capabilities ranged on either side of their disputed border.

Relations with Japan and South Korea also remain under strain, while relations with the Philippines hit rock bottom in Q2 following a protracted dispute over Scarborough Shoal, a remote territory in the South China Sea. However, China has benefitted from Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)'s inability to form a unified position on South China Sea issues.

Over the last quarter, BMI has revised the following forecasts/views:

- BMI has updated its analysis of Sino-US relations, including China's reaction to the US announcement that it plans to deploy 60% of its naval ships to the Pacific region as part of its strategic 'pivot'.
- Developments in China's relations with Japan and South Korea are analysed in detail. Japan has continued to complain about Chinese 'incursions' and is stepping up attempts to press its claim to the disputed Senkaku Islands. Meanwhile, China's detention and alleged torture of a South Korean activist proved highly controversial in Seoul.
- Vietnam showed a characteristic refusal to be intimidated by China's territorial claims, passing a new Marime Law in Q2 which reaffirmed its ownership of the Paracel and Spratly Islands. Beijing retaliated by setting up a new prefectural city on the largest of the Paracels.
- The latest developments in China's defence industry are also reviewed, including a Chinese swoop for aerospace firm Hawker Beechcraft.
